Waiting for the Tooth Fairy
(posted November 21, 2010)

God is alive. Magic is afoot.
God is afoot. Magic is alive.
Alive is afoot. Magic never died.
........~ Leonard Cohen

Several years ago I had a tooth pulled. Not just any tooth, this was a 50-year old baby tooth. I first learned about it during a visit to the dentist in my twenties.

I resolved, then and there, to keep that tooth in my mouth and take it with me to the grave. It was a sign (albeit, a small one) of my body’s ability to produce parts that were built stronger and lasted longer. I felt like the Energizer bunny rabbit of the dental profession.

About two years later, a piece of the tooth broke off and my dentist suggested having the tooth extracted. I could almost hear the sound of my heels digging in as I stubbornly asked if there was another option. He said he could try encasing the tooth in a filling. "Do it,” I quickly replied. This tooth was staying, and that was that.

Each time I went for my semi-annual cleaning, my dentist reminded me the tooth was continuing to deteriorate. “Whenever you’re ready,” he gently coaxed. “When hell freezes over,” I thought to myself.

Well, hell started freezing over about eight months later. My jaw became sore to the touch. But when my dentist asked about the tooth, I lied and said it was just fine. At my next semi-annual appointment, I finally confessed to the pain and begrudgingly agreed to have the tooth removed.

I made an appointment with an oral surgeon. It was a simple extraction, done under local anesthesia. After he finished, I told the surgeon I wanted to take the tooth with me. I explained that it was a baby tooth and I wanted to put it under my pillow for the Tooth Fairy. The surgeon chuckled, thinking I was joking, and wrapped it up for me.

My family will tell you that I do not joke about such weighty matters as the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. I have always believed in them. For me, a world without magic and miracles would simply be too boring to accept.

I placed my baby tooth on the night stand by my bed and explained to my husband why it was there—I'm waiting for the Tooth Fairy.

Astrology: My Way
(posted November 8, 2010)

If I were an astrologer—which I'm not—here’s how I would interpret my astrological chart: My 1st house (personality) went ‘direct’ when I turned 50. Direct, as in more forthcoming, less beating around the bush.

I mooned my 2nd house of financial and material affairs after realizing the best way to have more is to want less. Simple to say, not always easy to do.

I'm in the process of upgrading my 12th house of the subconscious mind and hidden problems after realizing the previous version was riddled with inappropriate beliefs and other irksome bugs.

I'm happy to report having blown the roof off my 9th house of spiritual connection. No more structural limitations; now the sky is the limit.

And my 11th house, ah, my precious 11th house of hopes and wishes. is on the cusp of overflowing. I truly am blessed.
